  1. Amanda says:

This confuses me. Veganism is a lifestyle, not just a diet. By purchasing non-vegan food, even if you throw away the cheese and sour cream packets, you are still a consumer, which is not vegan.

    1. Taylor says:

No judgement here but for my personal lifestyle, I agree with Amanda. Animal products present = no purchase

    2. Beth Ann Senderak says:

Did you even bother to ask her if she asks them to leave those items out? The judging is over the top here. I don’t think you should drive a car or use many of the things you likely use bc it’s “not vegan.”

      1. Donat says:

I think the argument is that regardless of whether or not we actually eat those items, the fact that we get a service that includes anything not vegan is a no-no. I would disagree and much like what you said Beth Ann, many of the products everyone uses daily are not vegan. I still appreciate the feedback from you all!

  2. Mindy says:

I have to agree. I would not be comfortable buying and then throwing away any animal product. Try purple carrot, green chef, or sun basket- all these services are very similar in their process to hello fresh, and they offer vegan boxes. Personally, I purchase purple carrot because they ONLY have vegan options, so I want to support their business.

    1. Donat says:

I’m with you Mindy about the other boxes being more ideal, we have tried them and they were also good. Purple carrot used to be by far our favorite service but they have since changed their business model, pricing, and their recipes. It might work for some but we really don’t like it so much anymore.

  3. Purin says:

Can you please talk about how you make these recipes vegan? Do you just throw away the dairy and replace it with vegan options? I love the convenience but don’t want to waste food.

    1. Donat says:

To clarify a couple of things: each of these food subscription services allows you to “skip” weeks. We only get this box when we viewed the upcoming recipes, which they post ahead of time, and approve of the recipes. Most of the boxes we end up getting are 100% vegan from the start but the ones that are not, we substitute our own ingredients. For example if done right, blended up tofu gives you the same exact flavor and consistency as sour cream, which is often a topping on an otherwise vegan recipe. Anything we don’t use like dairy, we usually end up feeding our cat & dog as treats. We are okay with this system, clearly some people do not approve. It’s all about what you are comfortable with.
Check out our Home Chef review, I would recommend them over hello fresh, they tend to have more vegan options since there is the option to do only 2 meals instead of 3.
